The 8th International Workshop on Retrieval of Bio- & Geo-physical Parameters from SAR Data for Land Applications will take place in Rome from the 15-17 of November.
Caroline Göhner of Eurac Research will participate with a presentation on 'Modelling Biophysical Parameters of Alpine Grassland from Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 Data using Spatial Gap-filling' in the session on agriculture.
Due to frequent cloud cover in the Alps the Sentinel-2 derived LAI (Leaf Area Index) maps are often affected by gaps. With its ability to penetrate clouds Sentinel-1 SAR data holds a great potential to enrich the LAI time series.
In this research, machine learning techniques are employed to model the LAI of grassland in the provinces of Bolzano and Trento. The accuracy of the models is then validated using ground measurements collected from different meadows.
