Crop management

Objectives

The main objective is to unlock the potential of a variety of data (EO imagery, soil analysis, farm logs etc.) for

  • expanding Smart Farming (SF) services and
  • enabling monitoring of sustainability performance for policy purposes, at European-wide level.

Technology / Methodology

Three Sub-Labs are part of the Crop Management RILab. All focus on Smart Farming services but each RI Lab has a unique perspective:

Agri-environmental monitoring for Policy Makers (NP):

  • Create a mechanism and a governance plan for collecting the IoT and farm log data at the farm level and aggregating them at a regional level to support policy makers in making decisions.
  • A new sensor for automatic pesticides detection will be used to collect data needed by Policy Makers to monitor CAP sustainability KPIs.
  • Data assimilation and data fusion will be used to maximize the reach of its IoT network while minimizing the number of sensor needed to support proper advice to farmers.

Sustainability Performance (HORTA SRL):

  • Combine weather and soil data from in situ sensors with S2 data for better crop monitoring and more precise input for the DSS.
  • Using advanced modelling techniques and based on the farm log, the DSS will calculate the sustainability KPIs of the farms for the selected operations, offering guidance and proof.

Early Pest Detection (WODR & PSNC):

  • Combine data coming from phenological observation stations, weather stations, soil sensors and machinery, and implement the respective AI algorithms and data fusion/integration to
    • estimate the probability of occurrence
    • identify pests on the fields
    • enable early detection of pest infestation in given regions by integrating to a national Pest Signalling System

Expected outcome

  • All partners will produce Smart Farming advice in >= 3 regions, helping farmers increase the production efficiency, reduce costs and minimize their risks
  • NP will aggregate and scale up the data and feed it into an AgriEnvironmental Monitoring Tool that will support policy makers in designing and monitoring the implementation of sustainability related policies.
  • HORTA SRL will integrate data from the various sources to calculate different sustainability KPIs, focusing on the economic, environmental and social sustainability of the crop.
  • WODR and PSNC will combine the data and feed them to the Pest Signaling System, operated by Institute of Plant Protection, to upscale and use it for early pest detection in given regions.
